Insta360 X6 Is Getting Closer. Leaks Point to a Major Upgrade


Information status: 27 July 2026. All information concerning the Insta360 X6 remains unofficial until it is confirmed by the manufacturer.

Waiting for the successor to the Insta360 X5 has just become much more difficult. Renders, photographs of a working device and images of the packaging of a camera that will most likely be called the Insta360 X6 have appeared online. If the leaked information proves accurate, this may be far more than a routine refresh of the flagship series. It could become one of the most exciting launches in the 360° camera market this year.

The list of alleged upgrades is substantial: 360° video recording in 8K at 50fps, larger sensors, a shorter body, a 2,600mAh battery, a bright OLED display and an improved replaceable-lens system. The most exciting claim, however, concerns the launch date. According to the person who published photographs of a pre-production device, the camera may be unveiled as early as 30 July 2026. One source discussing this information is Notebookcheck’s report on the latest Insta360 X6 leaks.

Important: Insta360 has not officially announced the X6. Although the product name has appeared in FCC certification documents, the specifications, prices and launch date described in this article originate from leaks. The available reports support one another in several areas, but the final details will only become known after an official announcement from Insta360.

The Insta360 X6 appears more clearly than ever

The first published renders are said to originate from marketing materials and product listings discovered at retailers. They show a camera that is noticeably shorter and wider than the X5. Instead of the elongated body associated with previous models, the device is closer in proportion to a conventional action camera. Further information can be found in an earlier report covering the alleged X6 renders and body design.

The renders appear to show two fisheye lenses, a screen beneath one of them, side-mounted controls, microphone openings and a mounting thread on the bottom. It remains a fully fledged 360° camera, but one enclosed in a form factor that could be more convenient on a long selfie stick or when mounted on a motorcycle, bicycle or helmet.

In practice: a shorter body creates less leverage on the mount. This may make the camera more comfortable to use on a long selfie stick and reduce how far it protrudes beyond a vehicle. The real stability of the new design can only be assessed after testing the final production model.

Larger sensors and 8K at 50fps — two upgrades that must work together

The most widely discussed claim is the possibility of recording full 360° video in 8K at up to 50fps. The Insta360 X5 officially records 8K video at up to 30fps. The new mode could therefore deliver smoother motion and make it possible to slow footage down by 50% on a 25fps timeline without dropping frames. The alleged X6 specifications are described in WinFuture’s leaked specification overview.

This matters particularly for a 360° camera. The device records the entire surrounding sphere, while the user chooses the final framing later during editing. A higher frame rate may therefore improve the smoothness of fast rides, sports footage, motorcycle recordings and rapid reframing movements created in post-production.

A higher frame rate also places greater demands on the camera. Each frame has less time to collect light, which means recording at 50fps may be more challenging in low-light conditions than recording at 30fps. This is where the alleged pair of 1/1.1-inch sensors becomes important. According to the leaks, they will replace the 1/1.28-inch sensors used in the X5. A larger sensor area offers greater potential for collecting light and retaining detail, although the final result will also depend on the optics, pixel design, image processing and compression. Details of the larger sensors appeared in an analysis of the leaked X6 specifications.

The larger sensors and increased frame rate should therefore be considered as one combined package of changes. Larger sensors may help preserve image quality in the demanding 8K/50fps mode, while the additional frames could make that quality more useful when recording movement. Only original footage will show whether Insta360 has achieved this balance without excessive noise, overheating or aggressive compression.

Key takeaway: 8K at 50fps may be the most spectacular new feature of the X6, but the larger sensors are likely to determine whether the increased frame rate produces genuinely better footage rather than simply larger files.

PureVideo is not new, but the X6 may reveal its full potential

PureVideo will not make its debut with the X6. The mode is already available in products including the Insta360 X5, Ace, Ace Pro and Ace Pro 2 cameras, the compact GO Ultra and the Luna Ultra gimbal camera. Its purpose is to improve low-light footage by reducing noise, brightening the image and optimising dynamic range.

According to the leaks, the X6 will record 360° PureVideo footage at a maximum resolution of 8K at 30fps. The lower frame rate compared with the standard 8K/50fps mode would make sense. PureVideo prioritises image quality and detail in low light, while a lower frame rate allows each individual frame to use a longer exposure time.

Each of the new sensors is said to offer a resolution of 42MP, while completed spherical photographs may reach as much as 120MP. Other alleged features include 10-bit colour, Dolby Vision, an I-Log profile and Adaptive Tone 2.0. If confirmed, these features could give the X6 considerably greater potential for users performing advanced colour correction and post-production.

A shorter body, OLED display and possible internal storage

Unofficial information points to dimensions of approximately 100 × 50 × 40mm and a weight of 195g. The X5 officially measures approximately 46 × 124.5 × 38.3mm and weighs 200g. The new model would therefore be substantially shorter, slightly wider and marginally lighter than its predecessor.

The display is expected to use a touchscreen OLED panel reaching a brightness of up to 1,200 nits. Such an upgrade could make the interface considerably easier to read while recording in bright sunlight.

The person who published the real-world photographs also claims that accessing the microSD card will not require removing the battery. The camera is additionally said to include internal storage, although its capacity has not been disclosed. These claims come from a user who says they had access to a pre-production unit, so they should not yet be treated as confirmed.

The same user admitted that they could not reliably assess the recorded footage. The available version of the Insta360 app did not yet support files from the new camera, which prevented FlowState stabilisation and normal processing from being applied. We may therefore have photographs of a working device, but there is still no reliable comparison of its image quality with the X5.

140 minutes of 8K recording — an impressive claim with an important caveat

A photograph of the alleged packaging shows a 2,600mAh battery and claims up to 140 minutes of 360° recording in 8K at 30fps. For comparison, Insta360 states that the standard X5 battery provides approximately 93 minutes of recording in the same mode.

However, the conditions under which the claimed 140 minutes were achieved remain unknown. The packaging does not state whether the display was switched off, which bitrate was selected, whether additional processing features were disabled or what temperature was used during testing. For the X5, the official 93-minute result was measured with the display switched off, at 25°C, with Wi-Fi set to Auto, the standard bitrate selected, and AdaptiveTone and AI Highlights Assistant disabled. We cannot assume that the X6 was tested under identical conditions, but real-world battery life may be shorter than the figure printed on the packaging. The X5 test conditions are described in Insta360’s official battery-life documentation.

Another leak mentions a maximum recording time of as much as 233 minutes. It does not, however, provide a resolution, frame rate or mode name. The most plausible explanation is that a less demanding recording mode was used, similar to the Endurance Mode available on the X5, but this remains speculation.

Based on recommendations for existing X-series cameras, battery life may potentially be extended by allowing the display to switch off, reducing its brightness, disabling unnecessary AI features, recording without an active connection to the mobile app and selecting a lower resolution or frame rate. There are currently no measurements showing how much additional recording time these changes may provide on the X6. Guidance concerning temperature and power consumption on the X5 is available in Insta360’s official support documentation.

Worth knowing: according to the packaging, the 140-minute figure applies to 360° recording in 8K at 30fps, but the test conditions are unknown. It should be treated as a claimed maximum rather than a guaranteed recording time under all conditions.

The Reddit materials also show a dual-battery charging case with an integrated cable. According to the source, it can charge the batteries inserted into it and can also operate as a power bank when required. This information still needs official confirmation.

Replaceable Lenses 2.0 — an evolution of one of the X5’s best features

The packaging carries the phrase Replaceable Lenses 2.0. The X5 already allows users to replace damaged external lens elements themselves, so the new name suggests an upgraded second generation of the system.

It is not yet known whether Insta360 has changed the mounting method, glass durability, sealing, replacement-kit pricing or calibration procedure. The highly exposed lenses of a 360° camera are particularly vulnerable to scratches, so even a seemingly modest improvement could prove valuable during sport and travel use.

On paper, this appears to be a substantial generational improvement, particularly in terms of the 8K frame rate, sensor size and claimed battery life. It is important to remember, however, that every X6 specification in the right-hand column still originates from unofficial materials. The X5, meanwhile, remains an available product with confirmed specifications, mature software and a broad range of accessories.

30 July is emerging as the most likely launch date

Reddit user u/FunnySushi1738 identified 30 July 2026 as the planned launch date. The reports are supported to some extent by the certification of a device identified as the Insta360 X6 in the FCC database. The certification confirms that the product exists and that its wireless modules have been tested, but it does not confirm the complete specification or the date on which sales will begin.

The price also remains uncertain. Early leaks mentioned €689 for the camera alone and €789 for the Essentials Bundle. Later reports based on a photograph of the packaging pointed to €589 for the basic version and approximately €789 for a more extensive bundle. The discrepancy is too large for either figure to be treated as confirmed.

These amounts appear to relate to possible pricing in the eurozone. They should not be interpreted as confirmed international prices for the United Kingdom, United States or other markets. Regional pricing may differ because of taxes, distribution costs, exchange rates, import arrangements and the contents of each bundle.

In summary: 30 July is currently the most frequently repeated and most likely date for the presentation. Until Insta360 publishes an official announcement, however, it remains a date originating from a leak. The same applies to the prices and availability of individual bundles.

What do we still not know about the Insta360 X6?

The list of leaked specifications is extensive, but several important questions remain unanswered:

  • how the X6 will compare with the X5 in real daytime and low-light recordings;
  • whether 8K/50fps will be available without significant temperature or recording-time limitations;
  • what bitrate and compression will be used and how good the 10-bit footage will be in practice;
  • how much internal storage the camera will provide and whether it will be included in every version;
  • whether the new battery will be compatible with any existing Insta360 system, such as the one used by the Ace Pro series;
  • what level of waterproofing the device will offer;
  • how much the camera will cost in different markets;
  • when retail availability will actually begin;
  • which memory-card interface will be used and which cards will be officially recommended for the 8K/50fps mode.

The last question may prove particularly important. Current Insta360 cameras, including the X5, use UHS-I V30 or faster microSD cards formatted in exFAT. The manufacturer’s latest guidance also recommends cards capable of approximately 120MB/s write speeds for continuous 8K recording. The V30 marking guarantees only a defined minimum sustained write speed and does not mean that every card will deliver identical performance during long recording sessions. Increasing the frame rate from 30 to 50fps may result in a higher bitrate and greater storage demands, although the X6 bitrate and card-reader standard are not yet known. High-quality cards that perform extremely well in the X5 may continue to work correctly, but until Insta360 publishes an official compatibility list, there is no guarantee that they will be the optimal choice for the X6’s most demanding recording modes.

The first original files recorded with the final production camera will be the most important evidence. Only then will it become clear whether the larger sensors, 8K/50fps recording and new generation of image processing deliver a difference that is visible not only in a specification table, but also on a phone, monitor and VR headset.

If the leaks prove accurate, the Insta360 X6 will combine a considerably shorter body with larger sensors, 8K/50fps recording, longer battery life and a new generation of replaceable lenses.

The excitement is therefore completely justified — certainty is not. Very little time remains before the expected launch, and only the official presentation will reveal which of the reported changes will actually reach the final camera. One thing is certain: the 360° camera market has suddenly become much more exciting.
